Non-Swiss University Degree
If you hold a bachelor’s degree from a university outside of Switzerland, please refer to the overview of the application process.
1) Submission of Application
Please submit your application, along with all required documentation through application.unibe.ch.
The regular application deadline for the Master of Science program is 30 April 2025. Late applications are only accepted if a visa for entering and residing in Switzerland is not required.
As the processing time is approximately two months, we strongly recommend applying as early as possible if a visa is necessary.
Please note that no language test scores are required for the MSc Precision Engineering.
You can find the checklist for your documentation, important information and a step-by-step guide on the FACTSHEET.
If you meet the admission requirements, the dossier is passed on for assessment to the MSc Precision Engineering study coordination.

2) Assessment with the SBPE
Assessment Process
After 1 to 3 weeks after documents and payment are complete all documents are forwarded to the Faculty of Science and from there to the School of Biomedical and Precision Engineering.
The SBPE verifies that the attainments of your record of studies from abroad correspond to a parallel qualification from Bern, whether and which additional academic requirements you must meet before or during your desired master's degree course at the University of Bern, and whether academic attainments already undertaken can be credited at Bern. → The assessment of your application for admission may take 2 weeks, longer if follow-up inquiries are necessary.
→ The assessment is sent to the Faculty of Science that confirms the assessments of applications.
Please allow roughly 4 to 6 weeks for this process.
If your calculated grade corresponds to a Swiss grade of 5 or higher and you hold a degree as outlined in the admission requirements, you may receive an admission decision. Please note that the decision may be conditional if additional academic requirements need to be met. The decision also states if prior academic achievements can be credited towards your program at the University of Bern.
Standardized Interview
If your calculated grade falls between 4.5 and 5, you will be invited to participate in a standardized interview. The MSc Precision Engineering study coordination office will contact you directly with further details. The interview can be conducted either in Bern or online, and you will receive additional information upon receiving the invitation.
After the interview, the study management team will forward their decision to the Faculty of Science for final review.
3) Completion of Registration
You will receive a written invitation to complete the registration formalities, which will be sent from April at the earliest for studies beginning in the fall. If you decide not to study at the University of Bern or wish to defer your application to the following year, please inform us as soon as possible by emailing the Admissions Office and the MSc Precision Engineering study coordination office.
The scrutiny of your original diploma and/or certificate will take place within two to three weeks of receipt, to ensure consistency with the certified copies you submitted.
You will then receive information about your campus account, followed by the delivery of the invoice for tuition and semester fees. Once payment is received, you will be issued a certificate of registration and your UNICARD.
While the admission decision is often sufficient to begin the visa process, the matriculation confirmation is typically required to complete your visa application.
