Wear Resistant Decorative Coatings

Wear resistant decorative multilayer coatings by combined PVD and ALD deposition

Decorative coatings enable almost any color to be achieved using thin-film deposition technologies, offering both enhanced aesthetics and mechanical protection. The use of Swisscluster AG new SC1 reactor makes it possible to combine PVD and ALD processes in a single reactor for greater flexibility in multilayer design, and to produce hard coatings with vibrant hues. In fact, the introduction of intermediate oxide layers by ALD reinforces structural integrity, reducing stress and enhancing abrasion resistance.

Students will design and produce a variety of multilayer systems combining metallic and dielectric films of different materials with oxide interlayers to achieve precise colors that will find applications on 2D and 3D surfaces.
